Take an amazing voyage of discovery through the special treasures of the southern night sky. Explore the Moon and/or planets from our dark sky site. Discover areas of star formation and death using our research grade telescope in the rotating dome. Sit inside the giant sundial and learn how stars and constellations were used by Maori to explore the Pacific.
Handle meteorites from space older than the Earth. Walk with us through the 25m long scale model solar system to understand its’ true size and our own place in the Universe. Follow our geological timeline from the Big Bang till the present day using ancient fossils and unique and rare mineral specimens to learn how the Earth developed and life evolved.

Driving Directions
- Coming from Whitianga:
Drive along Buffalo Beach Road (SH 25) north out of Whitianga, past Wharekaho (Simpsons) Beach and over the ranges towards Kuaotunu. After about 10km you start the long descent towards Kuaotunu: look for mailboxes on the left at ‘School of Mines Lane’ turnoff, about 2km before you get to Kuaotunu Beach and settlement. We are then first entrance on the left after crossing the small bridge.
- Coming from Thames:
From Thames, drive north towards Coromandel Town on SH 25 along the coast. Turn right 200m south of Coromandel Town towards Whangapoua and Whitianga on SH25. After about 40 minutes the first beach you reach is Kuaotunu Beach. Continue along beach and follow highway south and inland for about 2km. We are on the right…look for mailboxes at ‘School of Mines Lane’ turnoff. We are then first entrance on the left after crossing the small bridge.
Tours take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on numbers attending and start after dusk on most clear nights.
All tours are weather dependent as we need clear skies to operate. If tours can not go ahead due to weather or other issues, clients should contact SeeAndDo for a refund or to arrange another date.
