Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail takes you on an unforgettable adventure across Northland through native forests, lakes and historic towns from the Bay of Islands to the heart of Hokianga Harbour. 87km from the stunning Bay of Islands to the tranquil Hokianga Harbour enjoy stunning scenery with magnificent views, a unique train trip and a fascinating journey through New Zealand’s earliest Māori and European settlements.
New Zealands northernmost Great Ride; Pou Herenga Tai - Twin Coast Cycle Trail is one of only 23 “Great Rides”.
Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail travels from the famously beautiful Bay of Islands to the remote and picturesque Hokianga Harbour, or vice versa. New Zealand’s only coast-to-coast trail.
A scenically spectacular cross-country journey with an irresistible mix of relaxing riding with some seriously significant heritage sites and stories.
Glittering coast, a tranquil harbour, wetlands, native forest and rolling farmland can all be enjoyed on this journey across the Far North, which passes through towns rich in Māori & colonial history and manaakitanga (hospitality).
Following a smooth rail trail, cycle paths, wetland boardwalk, suspension bridges and country roads, the trail can be ridden in either direction or broken into smaller day trips. We recommend basing yourself in Kaikohe, as travel both to the east and west will be downhill. It is both relaxing and highly rewarding, with opportunities to visit various cultural sites and attractions while enjoying the sub-tropical climate for which the ‘winterless’ north is famous.
The Pou Herenga Tai - Twin Coast Cycle Trail stretches from Ōpua, in the Bay of Islands to the historic Māngungu Mission House in Hōreke located alongside the stunning Hokianga harbour.
The cycle trail hub is located at the Pioneer Village in Kaikohe, which also happens to be the half-way point of the 87km journey.
The trail is split into four sections, an easy ride almost the entire way with the exception of the short intermediate section between Ōkaihau and Hōreke, as you make your way along a series of switchbacks down the Utakura Valley.
Although the trail can be ridden in either direction, the most popular route is downhill in either direction from Kaikohe near the centre of the trail.
Kaikohe is the location of the Cycle hub, and of both bike hire operators.
